Uni-lateral Training: Let it mellow or flush?

Uni-lateral Training: Let it mellow or flush?

The best thing about the fitness and strength industry is that you can always rely on it for some really good laughs. The fact that unilateral exercises have sparked such heated debate is amusing, and as always, the answer lies somewhere in the middle. First, let's examine the pro-unilateral crowd:

Stress and Lifting: Get Off Your Knees

Stress and Lifting: Get Off Your Knees

I think we've all been in situations that completely drain you emotionally, physically, and mentally. It could be from school, death, divorce, money woes, or significant other stress. What I've always done is make sure lifting remains a huge part...

Huge Cow

Milk is Dead. Long Live Beef.

For years, people have championed a gallon of whole milk/day as a great way to get stronger and bigger. And it works. Very well. Growing up and learning about training, I was pretty well insulated from training knowledge. We had to use our limited experience, common sense and work ethic as well as actively seeking mentors. I never really heard of the milk theory until well into college. At that time, if I was going to drink anything it was going to be a beer or a shot. So I wasn't going to waste time with milk. However, I did need to eat, and eat I did. Like most young men into training and football, I never ate for pleasure (yes, there was a time eating wasn't an emotional or moral issue with people.) I ate for a purpose and that purpose was to get bigger, stronger and to ultimately get better at football. And with a small budget...

Be Your Own Leader

Be Your Own Leader

Lead yourself to greatness. And greatness is not measured in medals, money or public opinion - it is measured in happiness and freedom. And when you strip all the crap away, the noise and bullshit of a fucked up, commercialized world that makes you constantly bow and suck at it's sick, diseased teat - you will have found freedom and happiness...Your "gut" check is here and now - mold yourself with your own hands.

Building the Monolith - 5/3/1 for Size

Building the Monolith - 5/3/1 for Size

6 Week Training Template for size: So this template is not easy but it is very doable – but only if you are dedicated to making it happen. “Dedicated” doesn’t just mean that you want to do it; it means you are dedicated to doing what it takes to get it done and that means EATING right. I had 4 people run this and all of them ate like champions – all ate at least..

These Keep Me Going

These Keep Me Going

I started lifting at 16 (now 22) and so far you have gotten a naturally skinny kid with no athletic potential from 155lbs to 200lbs with a 250lb bench, 440lb deadlift and 375lb Squat. You even inspired me to compete in my first meet last year which was a great experience.

Advice to Football Players

Advice to Football Players

"Read a book and go to class. You don't need to be a genius to do both of these things. People get VERY upset when you have interest outside of what they peg you to be. It makes them uncomfortable because they usually suck at everything. This is good. Make them upset by being better."

Instagram Question & Answer Part 1

Instagram Question & Answer Part 1

This is the first half of the Instagram Q/A that I put up recently.  Some of the questions were answered on the Table Talk that Dave Tate and I did. The ones we didn't get to, I answered them below.

Justin Greaves: From Sludge to End Time Ballads

To say Iron Monkey was a part of my college experience is an understatement.  I was lucky to be part of the "first wave of sludge" -  Eyehategod, Floor, Cavity, Grief, 13, Buzzoven, Corrupted, Dystopia (same vein), 16 and others. ...

Football and Basketball: Coach's 5/3/1 Experience

Football and Basketball: Coach's 5/3/1 Experience

More importantly, are the results on the court and hopefully on the field in the fall. The kids are playing with an aggression I have not seen in a basketball team at this school in many years. They are winning the tough games, the games that require mental toughness, something that was lacking during football. They have won eight straight games and are one game out of first in the league. They credit their success to the training they are doing in the weight room and have tried to get the other basketball players to lift with them. I had the players test their max verticals the first day of practice. Two players could barely touch the foam pad on the bottom of the backboard; they are both slapping the glass.

Hardcore Training

A few weeks back it was very cold - the garage was numbing, the bars hurt my hands and the wind kept blowing snow into my face while I lifted. Just one of those days. And all I could think...

5/3/1 Tops the List - Most Popular Programs

I had no idea I'd write a book - I just love training. And I still do. And as you become more and more popular and try to help others, you will be hated by more and more. It is just part of the game and it's good to know that you will occupy the mind/time of total losers who hang on to your every word. They are just waiting to comment and send you something shitty. Conor McGregor recently said something important: "Winners focus on winning. Losers focus on winners." Seems to be about right.
