Dick Tomey - Legacy of Coaching

Dick Tomey - Legacy of Coaching

It’s been over 20 years since I had last played football. The first 15 of these years flew by; life moved forward fast and I never really had a chance to look back and appreciate that time of my life. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized how lucky I was to have Dick Tomey as a head coach.

Training Questions Regarding Young Athletes

Training Questions Regarding Young Athletes

I'm amazed at how many people train kids like they are Olympic level athletes who need some advanced programming/training.  It is also equally obnoxious to train them like they are elderly or made of glass, having entire workouts of pre-hab, rehab and balance work.  If you are an athlete who hasn't mastered basic calisthenics, running and bodyweight movements, you better build your base before you try to touch the clouds.  No base = no foundation.  And a proper foundation isn't built on a Bosu.

Same Goal, Different Road

Same Goal, Different Road

Athletes from The Past talk brazenly about their conditioning and workouts; all done supposedly to get them in great shape and turn them into stronger players (physically and mentally). There seems to be a premium on Mental Toughness amongst people from The Past.

Anti-Concussion Protocol

Anti-Concussion Protocol

Concussions have become Public Enemy #1 the last few years. The pendulum has swung all the way to other side; years ago, concussions were just part of the game of football. 4 Ways to Physically Dominate

4 Ways to Physically Dominate

If you don't work with athletes there is still plenty to take away here.  If you do work with athletes and you're realizing that your entire strength training approach is a disaster, start with just one of the above and don't give up on the journey.

Advice for Coaches - 9 Simple Tips

Advice for Coaches - 9 Simple Tips

Athletes do not care about training as much as you do. If they did, you wouldn’t have a job.  Your job is less important than you think but more important than many coaches/admins/parents believe it is. Understand that there are a lot of moving parts to any successful season; just because you are a good strength coach doesn’t mean you will win. And just because you win, doesn’t make you a good strength coach. You can point to any dozen of things for reasons for success and failure.

5/3/1 Bench Press Questions

5/3/1 Bench Press Questions

Question:
You have listed 5x5/3/1 as the go to template to use for bench on the hardgainers template. Also I have noticed it pop up on other programs sort of the way widowmakers go with squats and BBS goes with the press. My question is have your thoughts now changed regarding the use of 5x5/3/1 as the go to for bench?

To Kill Yourself Or Not

To Kill Yourself Or Not

Question: I know everyone’s different, and guys like Walter are also freaks of nature. Just curious as to your thoughts on how “killing himself” like he did worked so well, when in reality it wouldn’t for most?
