Roger Estep Deadlift - The Rack Pull Myth Article- jimwendler.com

The Great Rack Pull Myth

This is a classic case of an idea that works beautifully in theory but, at least in many cases, fails to pay off in the real world. The theory behind rack pulls is that they allow you to use more weight than you normally can handle in conventional deadlifts, which helps target  certain sticking points, namely the lockout position—a real sore spot for many lifters. Sounds good, huh?

Deadlift - Gear vs Raw - jimwendler.com

Gear vs Raw Lifting

The drama that is the Great Gear Debate is overwhelming. Powerlifting is one of the few sports where men will criticize what another man is wearing. I never thought powerlifting could end up on Bravo but it certainly looks like it might.

Bodybuilding, Being Independent and the Importance of Training Partners

Are you saying you don't need to get slapped in the face before every set?

Listen, this is what I learned. When I was at the University of Arizona and Rob Waldrop, who was the Outland Trophy Winner (awarded to the best college football interior lineman), was squatting. This guy was insanely strong. That day he was squatting in the mid-600's for 7 or 8 reps, and he was just getting under the bar when some kid yells, "C'mon Rob, lets go man!"

Rob just stopped...

Behind The Shield - First Responder Training - JimWendler.com

Behind the Shield Podcast

I have been doing a lot of podcasts recently; or at least more than I'm used to.  Am I that interesting or do I just blow a lot of hot air?  Probably a bit from Column A and a bit from Column B.  The latest podcast to be uploaded is from Behind the Shield. As usual, there are a lot of things discussed, a lot of tangents and some quality information.

Zach Thomas - Athletes & Genetics - jimwendler.com

The Truth on Genetics and Athletes

In athletics, genetics is often used as a reason for success and failure. It is a term that is used primarily as physical modifier; he who has the body and athletic ability to play his sport has great genetics.  However, sports is filled with many people who are insanely successful despite not having the traditional physical attributes associated with his sport.

Instinctive Strength Training- jimwendler.com

Instinctive Training

In theory, I think "instinctive training" does hold water. But in practice, for most people it's probably counterproductive. This doesn't mean you can't adjust your training day to day a little bit — to account for feeling better (going for more reps on a final set) or feeling worse (just doing the required workout and leaving). But to rely entirely on your instinct requires two things:

From Average to Athlete

Some of these standards may be easy; others may be hard. Don't be upset with the standards if you fail to make the grade. Standards should exist regardless of the social consequences. They don't exist to make you sad, unhappy, or a victim.

Bigger, Stronger, Baseball

Bigger, Stronger, Baseball

I've known the author, Nick, for over 10 years now.  Not only does he like to shoot his meals and has passable taste in music, but he is a great strength coach. I've seen how his players respond and work for him. The difference between an average/good coach and a great one is usually communication. How does he get his athletes to believe in him and trust in his process? Is he able to get his message to an athlete without resorting to gimmicks or abandoning his principles?  NIck has this in spades. Now read up. - Jim Wendler '17

The Nutrition Myth

This following video from "Funny or Die" sums up all the bullshit, myths, lies and downright stupidity that we have been forced to swallow from the majority of the nutrition world.  Every week, there is a new boogeyman and a...

Anyone Can Find 2 Days A Week For Strength

Anyone Can Find 2 Days A Week For Strength

In a previous life I was military explosive ordnance disposal technician and approaching 40 I feel every mile run, bomb suit worn, parachute landing, and Afghan trail cleared.

Now as a father of two very young ones with limited time I believe you wrote the 2x2x2 program with me mind. Without a doubt anyone can find two days a week for strength.

The Trap Bar

The Trap Bar

Let's face it, chasing the Big Three (squat, bench press, deadlift) can get tiresome, and having an acceptable substitution that can be used for several months might be just what you need to keep the fires burning.

Interview - Courtesy of Mark Bell and Jesse Burdick

Both Mark and Jesse are good friends of mine and I am super happy with their success and their continued dedication to helping others.  More importantly, they have treated me and my family with respect; something I find more important than just what they offer the strength world.

This interview covers a variety of subjects: training, the new 5/3/1 Forever book, coaching high school athletes, marriage and music.

Barbell Row vs DB Row

Barbell Row vs DB Row

Dorian Yates' back is the centerpiece of his insane, freaky physique, and the Yates row is one of the things he credits. Ed Coan's accomplishments in the powerlifting world have been well documented and if you've ever seen Ed in person, you know he's one of the thickest people to ever set foot in a weight room. And his 900-pound deadlift, to me, is the single-most impressive deadlift feat.

Now that I've satisfied all the barbell row zealots, the exercise does have its drawbacks. This is especially true for a lifter that's made significant progress in the squat and deadlift.
